Our two primary charities this past year were Genesis House in Winkler and South Central Cancer Resource in Morden. Shown here in the Genesis House presentation is Don Elias (Race Co-Chairman), and Angela Braun (Executive Director). Their primary purpose is Family Violence Prevention, and providing a safe haven for women and children. The area served is from Dominion City (east), to Clearwater (west), South to the US border, and north to Highway 2. They measure their occupancy in “bednights”, or each night a bed is occupied in their shelter. This past year, the number was 1782 vs. 1564 the year before. Their cheque was in the amount of $3872.37.
SCCR (South Central Cancer Resource) also received the same amount. Shown here presenting the cheque is Don Elias, Gail Shimonek (Board member/Altona), and June Letkeman (President). The provide rides for treatments, wigs, and support for Cancer patients from the Pembina Triangle. They receive no govt. money, and all funds are raised either by groups such as the Legends, or other fund raising efforts. This past year in the Altona/Gretna area alone, they provided 320 rides. Earlier this year, we also presented them with just over $14,000 raised through our Drive for Cancer.
.Besides our two main charities, we also supported the following groups: Altona Fire Dept: $1500 for emergency services, Club 75 (Morris): $1,000 security, Altona Elks: Parking and Gate: $250, The Bunker from Winkler who provided Food Services. They sold 550 lbs of french fries with their potatoes being donated by Kroekers. They kept the full profit from their food and beverage sales. We also paid the Town/RM $2,000 for the use of the Airport. Bunge provided $3000 for the Jet Car feature as well as our other sponsors providing $11,775. Due to our sponsors and entry fees, we also provided 3,000 spectators with a great 2 day show with the same admission prices as we did 15 years ago. A great event for all of Southern MB to enjoy. Next year’s 16th Annual Charity Drags will be held on Aug. 18th and 19th,2018.
See you there.
